What is a Blessing?
“For man goes to his eternal home while mourners go about in the street.”
- Ecclesiastes 12:5
For a great sermon on one of the ideas in the song about this world not being our home check out: Dealing With The Seasons Of Life from the series Ecclesiastes: Pre-Modern Wisdom in a Post-Modern World. Pastor Dan MacDonald talks about it I think half way into the message in his explanation of the beautifully poetic verse in Ecclesiastes above.
[12:5]
Love
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9
Don’t turn away. Look at Christ as He is now standing in glory calling you to come and what He has done for you in His life. He is our satisfaction. He is our greatest reason to give everything away.
My Limited Understanding of the Depth of the Gospel
This is my horrible attempt to summarize the gospel of God which after God Himself is the most multifaceted thing of beauty. Something that we will never know the depth of.
…”for I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to all who believe…” (Romans 1:16) Amen!
- “God is the gospel” - John Piper. The gospel is that a God exists and that He is good, infinitely powerful, and that He loves you and I not based on merit but based on his goodness.
- I might think in my heart, God sent Jesus to condemn everyone who doesn’t believe in Him… thankfully no, it is the way out “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does lot believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the man’s of the only begotten Son of God. This is the judgement, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not cone to the Light (God) for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.” (John 3:16-21) – [2011/03/10]
- God Himself is the gospel, hence the overarching path to the freedom and the greatest satisfaction possible in existence is the effect of hearing and giving yourself to the two greatest commandments: ”‘The foremost is, ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord; ‘And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ and ”You shall love your neighbor as yourself’” Matthew 22:36-39, Mark 12:28-34, Luke 10:25-28 (who is my neighbour Jesus answers as anyone you come across with a need in Luke 10:29-37)
- The gospel is about what God has done for me and not about what I have done or will do for God since God doesn’t need us to do anything. It isn’t about how much we can do but trusting in how much God can do. - [2010/10]
- Therefore, the gospel inherently takes away all pride and all lies that we tell ourselves – [2010/10]
- The gospel tells us that we are stubborn rebellious who deserve death, but that Jesus Christ has surely bore our griefs Himself and carried our sorrows. Jesus Christ was pierced through for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities, chastened for our wellbeing and scourged so that we could be healed. (Isaiah 53:4-5) - [2011/03/20]
- As one who has rebelled against God Almighty, my greatest grief is to have to face eternal judgement of God one day. On the cross, Jesus Christ bore that grief for me, carrying away my sorrow and shame. [2011/03/20]
- The gospel is for us, a gift from God that we must accept. The acceptance of which changes your attitude and posture from prideful rebel to humble servant as Jesus Christ was – [2010/10]
- The gospel is that Jesus Christ was lifted up just as Moses lifted up the serpant
- The gospel is that the good and righteous God upholds the righteous in His hands
- The gospel is that God is in control of the world.
- The gospel is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes
…”But whatever things to were my gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things as loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish (feces) so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law,but that which is through Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him and the power of the resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may obtain resurrection from the dead.
Not that I have already attained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold (make possession) of that which I was laid hold (made possession) of by Christ Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal (Christ-likeness here & now) for the prize (Christ-likeness in heaven) of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:7-14) Amen.
